"Any idea when you're chatting with the band?" a message arrives. "My request was to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a single issue: The author likewise wants to be the Haims' fourth member. And we're not alone. Multiple celebrated fans have publicly begged for the role.

The evidence suggests something is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Now they're multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the best groups, they're a inseparable gang. Their videos repeatedly depict them walking in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such pure exuberance you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a guitar'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That's the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can motivate others to start a band."

"Therefore everyone gets an invitation to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Recognition

The trio have called into their homes, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I tune into the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like The Truman Show when your name is announced," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The importance of the accolade is deeply felt by the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge step," continues Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The project emerged from a time of transition. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that unique transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes follow departures and goodbyes. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore description, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a slogan. You have to actively work on ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Sound

That recent resilience demanded a fresh approach – more raw and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our memoir," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The trio's honesty shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their dating misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

An Assured Future

You can clearly sense a change in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their place in the music world.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide audience.

However the sister act will consistently be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It feels as if nothing else that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still making music."
